What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient hands-on healing art that comes to us from Japan is used today as a modern healing technique. In modern era, Reiki is classified as an alternative, complementary, or integrative method or therapy. Reiki is capturing huge attention of people because it heals naturally without use of any medicine. Reiki has no side-effects. Reiki healing art is thousands of years old and complements medicine, nursing, and all healing professions. Reiki is receiving recognition, because it heals faster and is result oriented then all other ‘alternative’ healing methods. In this changing healthcare arena Reiki healing art is finally gaining the attention that Reiki rightly deserved.
Reiki is a Japanese word that translates as “God’s Light Energy or Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy” or popularly known as a unique means of healing the mind, body and soul. Reiki is combined of two words “Rei” and “Ki” “Rei” is translated as God’s Wisdom or the Higher Light Power of Universe. “Rei” is used to describe the whole of creation-every cell, blade of grass, stone, tree, and animal, human, every planet and star. It goes further to describe the ‘mind of God’. An accurate interpretation of the word “Rei” could be ‘All That Is’, both in thought and form. “Ki” is the name given to the vital energy or life force energy or non-physical energy that is used to give life to the creation. “Ki” is flowing in everything that is alive including plants, animals and humans. When a person's “Ki” is high, they feel strong, confident, and ready to enjoy life and take on it’s challenges. When the “Ki” is low, they feel weak and are more likely to get sick. We receive “Ki” from the Air we breath, from food, sunshine, and from sleep. It is also possible to increase our “Ki” by using breathing exercises and meditation. Reiki is a technique in which we can increase our “Ki” to a great extend, by regular practicing Reiki we build a huge amount of “Ki” in our physical system, we clear our subconscious mind, we can attain our goals and reach to great heights. When a person dies, their “Ki” leaves the physical body. This energy, is also known as “chi” in China or the “prana” in India(Sanskrit), the “Ti” or “ki” in Hawaiians and has also been called “odic force”, “orgone”, “bioplasma” and “the life force” it can be viewed as an ocean that surrounds the physical unit. It provides us with the strength we require to maintain our health, balance, and well being on all levels-physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no system of belief, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
Reiki is an ancient healing art that is thousands of years old and was rediscovered in the mid -1800’s to early 1900’s by Dr. Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui was a Japanese monk and educator who sought the origins of the healing art from the Tibetan sutras, ancient records of cosmology, and philosophy. Dr. Usui was a healer looking for a method that did not require him to use his own energy reserves while doing healing work. As part of his desire for an answer, Dr. Usui went on a vision quest, where he received the complete understanding of Reiki in a vision.
Other hands-on healing methods in use, at this time require the practitioners to use their own energy which can quickly be depleted. Reiki, as discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, channels spiritually guided life-force energy without draining energy from the practitioner. The laying on of hands method of Reiki is similar to healing used by Buddha and Jesus. Reiki utilizes the powers of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space (spirit) to help heal patients, opening their chakras and spiritually balancing them. Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that allows anyone to improve health and enhance the quality of life. Reiki is safe, gentle, and when combined with other forms of treatment, works as a medium to heal fast. Reiki treatments are deeply relaxing and are highly effective as treatment for stress, anxiety and tensions. Reiki treatments have been shown to enhance recovery from medical procedures. Since Reiki is the act of channeling spiritually guided life force energy, it can never be harmful. Receiving Reiki is a relaxing experience, like a massage. During a Reiki session you may feel a pleasant tingling sensation, experience radiant warmth, and you may drift off to sleep. Recent years, there has been a growing movement to place Reiki practitioners in hospitals. Doctors and nurses are receiving training in this Reiki technique every day.
Dr. Mikao Usui passed the Reiki Master initiation to Dr. Chijuro Hayashi and Dr. Hayashi taught Mrs. Hawayo Takata who brought Reiki to the United States in 1938. From there Reiki has spread rapidly.
During a meditation for several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part with the five principals of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously improving oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it also he or she must be open to receive so that he can recover fast, openness helps in deep healing. Thus, the theory of energy exchange came into force so that we can have lasting and permanent results. The Usui system of Reiki is more than just energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

As human beings, we are hard-wired for Reiki. The practice itself is so simple that it can easily be integrated into the human experience, whatever is your particular path or lifestyle. Reiki is a gift, not a skill. The ability to channel Reiki energy is passed on from master to student through a process known as attunement. During an attunement process, the Master selects a series of symbols, which represent important points located along a person’s energy field, and guides them through higher vibrations of energy. This attunement process enables recipients to access the healing energy on their own—and in turn, help others to access it too.
During the attunement initiation, the master reconnects the student to the innate ability to channel healing energy and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life. Think of it as the tuning of a musical instrument—but in this case, the instrument is you. Once you have received a Reiki attunement, it is yours for life, to be used to heal yourself and others. It cannot be erased or forgotten. All you need to do to activate it is have the intention to give Reiki.
Everyone can channel Reiki once they have received an attunement. Universal energy is all around us and flows through us. We receive it indirectly through sunlight, air, water and food. As children, we were probably all able to connect to this healing energy, but over time, with the stresses, uncertainties, emotional problems and our desire to fit in, our capacity to connect to the healing energy decreased. We have all experienced the power of touch to soothe, comfort and heal. Through the Reiki attunements, this connection is re-established, so that we have a direct link to the healing energy once more.
Reiki does not depend on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone.
Reiki is then practiced by developing our awareness of our own energetic self and bringing “ki” into ourselves to regenerate our body and free it from emotional issues, belief systems, and physical disorders that no longer exists in us. As our ability increases and our awareness grow we can allow this energy to flow through us for the benefit of others. Reiki is a way of bringing us home, of re-connecting with the essence of who we are. Reiki is a way to remove the blanket that prevents us from experiencing the union with the divine. So Reiki is a doorway that can re-connect us to the very place we came from. Reiki is a doorway to our home.
